Over the past few years, Woodbridge has been making great strides as an environmental town — and people are starting to take notice. This past December, Woodbridge Mayor John E. McCormac was named “Environmentalist of the Year” for 2014 by the Governor’s Environmental Excellence Awards.
The Governor’s Environmental Excellence Awards recognize environmental, academic, business, government, civic and citizen leaders from across New Jersey for their commitment to protect and enhance the state’s environment. Since he entered office in 2006, Mayor McCormac has been a leader in environmental work, spearheading and securing funding for initiatives from the installation of solar panels on city-owned buildings to implementing single-stream recycling, thereby reducing the cost of waste disposal while increasing recycling by 44%.
In addition, Woodbridge has engaged in work around restoring 100 acres of wetlands along the Raritan River, auditing school buildings to work towards energy conservation measures, and much more. The town has also been named a “Sustainable Champion” as part of the Sustainable Jersey program for five consecutive years.
