As the leaves tumble to the ground, nature in New Jersey continues to offer space for retreat, relaxation and exploration. In Somerset County, tree and rock-lined trails at Sourland Mountain Preserve provide some of the best hiking opportunities in Central Jersey.

At approximately 3,200 acres, Sourland Mountain Preserve runs through Hillsborough and Montgomery Townships. From the relatively simple 0.5-mile Pondside Trail to the 3.3-mile Ridge Trail, a rockier path with some tricky parts, there’s a path for everyone to navigate. In addition,
a new path was blazed and opened one year ago, marked by red rectangles and running north from Roaring Brook. Along with the giant, beautiful boulders by the top of the ridge, the Brook offers some of the most mesmerizing nature in the park.

Bring your bike, wear your hiking shoes, pack a picnic, and take a trip into the majestic nature of New Jersey. Just remember: however you choose to enjoy this idyllic slice of nature, bundle up when you visit Sourland Mountain Preserve this winter!
