The 1960’s was a time of both great turbulence and hope-filled promise; the turmoil of The Vietnam War, the Civil Rights protests, the JFK assassination and The Cuban Missile Crisis to name a few, stood out in contrast to many positive milestones that dotted the map of that decade. We sent a man to the moon, Dylan turned on the Beatles who in turn turned us on to their amazing music, Woodstock ushered in 3 days of music, peace and community, and the computer coding language BASIC (Beginner All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) was first introduced.
The music of the 1960’s was especially vibrant and remains to this day the inspirational pillar on which new exciting sounds make their way Into our cultural eco-systems here and abroad. In the 60’s we were awe-struck at the Newport Folk Festival when folk music melted into folk-rock (thank you Bob Dylan). We delighted those Saturday mornings when Don Cornelius brought us on board his “Soul Train” right in our very own living rooms where we’d groove out and dance to the Motown sounds of the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin and James Brown to name just a handful of my lifelong favorites. Brian Wilson’s Beach Boys brought the California surfing sound to life worldwide as we sought out Good Vibrations for a more peaceful planet.
