According to Wikipedia, “Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles…Evidence that curling existed in Scotland in the early 16th century includes a curling stone inscribed with the date 1511 found (along with another bearing the date 1551) when an old pond was drained at Dunblane, Scotland.”

My introduction to the world of competitive “curling” came in the form of a rebuke from a rather rattled adult…my dad! You see, we – my 2 junior high buddies that is – were in the den hanging out while a curling competition was taking place on our TV. As would be the case for most hyperactive athletic 8th graders, there were more snacks found on the floor than on our plates which my father noticed the moment he walked in. Not saying a word, he did an about face and walked down to the basement only to return a few minutes later with three brooms. “Here,” he bellowed, “time to start sweeping the floor like the fellas on TV are doing.”
