Thomas Alva Edison is the hometown hero of Menlo Park. The famous inventor and businessman brought to us such useful inventions as the motion picture camera, the stock ticker, the telegraph and, of course, the electric light bulb — along with his less well-known accomplishments such as the first industrial research laboratory. The Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park honors Edison’s memory by educating the public about the inventor and his accomplishments. The Edison Memorial Tower, an art deco monument located at the Menlo Park Historic Site, is listed on New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. Due to wear and the passage of time, however, the tower was until recently considered one of the ten most endangered historic sites in the Garden State.
Thanks to recent renovations, the tower has been restored to its former glory. Visit the site on Saturday, October 24th to take part in the Tower’s Rededication Ceremony, as the monument is relit in honor of Edison and the spirit of innovation.
