History lives at 149 Kearney Avenue in Perth Amboy, site of New Jersey’s famous Proprietary House. In pre-Revolutionary times, this mansion housed New Jersey’s last Royal Governor, William Franklin. Today, it stands as a monument to Perth Amboy’s important role as one of New Jersey’s colonial capitals.

Over its 250-year history, the Proprietary House has transformed from a Governor’s Mansion to a resort to a private residence to a rooming house. In the past twenty-five years, the Proprietary House Association has restored this important landmark to its former glory. Groups travel to Perth Amboy from great distances to see this significant piece of American history-the only remaining Royal Governor’s Mansion in the United States.

The Proprietary House is open to visitors on Wednesdays from 10am to 4pm, or at other times by appointment. Visitors looking to linger at the house can enjoy afternoon tea and desserts in the Tea Room from 1pm to 4pm on Wednesdays.
