The holidays are an ideal time to take a moment, spend time with loved ones, and count one’s blessings. For some, gratitude means reaching out and helping others who are less fortunate.
In 2005, Mayoral Assistant Janice Larkin and Kathy Aruta, President of the North Brunswick Food Bank, teamed up to create Operation Holiday Cheer, a charitable program to provide assistance to families in the community that have fallen on harder times. Originating at Our Lady of Peace Church, the program was designed to be a drop-off for donated toys and necessities to be given to those in need. The program quickly ballooned, however, and goods are now collected at both the church and the local food pantry. The program accepts toys, food, clothing, money and multipurpose gift cards to help families meet their needs.
Now in its eighth year, the program remains a strong North Brunswick institution. This year, 41 families were given assistance through Operation Holiday Cheer.
Drop-off locations for the program are located at multiple points in North Brunswick Township; Our Lady of Peace Church is located at 277 Washington Place.
