International Holocaust Remembrance Day is January 27th, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and the day marked by the United Nations to remember the Holocaust.

Michael Berenbaum, a well regarded writer, lecturer, and teacher consulting in the conceptual development of museums and the development of historical films had this to say when asked why it’s important to remember the Holocaust; “…we must understand the evil, the systematic evil, the state-sponsored evil, industrialized killing, mass murders that were the essence of the Holocaust…Their assignment: mass murder. Some were sadists and criminals—people unlike us—but many more were ordinary men trying to do their best, to fulfill their obligations. Some were even professionals, lawyers and doctors, ministers and economists who used the skills they had learned to become more efficient killers. Some were enthusiastic, others more reluctant; all became killers.”

Sadly to this day there are those whose purpose mirrors the same goals – whose very charters declare their murderous intentions starkly realized on October 7 2023 for all to see.

Equally vital are the lessons in resilience all peace loving people can learn from survivors and their families and Old Bridge residents at Woodhaven CommonsWoodhaven Meadows and Woodhaven Terrace are invited on January 24 @2pm to the Old Bridge Public Library to attend their HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE lecture where a child of a survivor family will be presenting. In honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, 2nd Generation survivor Michèle Nemenoff Blask will share her story: “I grew up amongst Holocaust survivors in Montreal, Canada. Every family has a story. My family’s story is a story of survival, persistence, and love. It is universal yet uniquely personal.”
