On July 9th, the NJ Transit Board of Directors approved expanded vehicles for 35 light rail vehicles. This change presents a welcome shift — offering 50% increased seating capacity for the tens of thousands of passengers that ride the light rail each day.
The new vehicles, prototyped and piloted in 2013, will add two additional sections to existing light rail vehicles, increasing the number of sections and thus the car’s length, seating capacity, and standing room — all using existing resources, and thus resulting in no additional costs to taxpayers. The new vehicles will be in regular service starting in late 2015.
The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail has been in service since 2000, during which time its ridership has grown steadily; this year, the rail service saw over 45,000 passenger rides per day, providing vital transit connection amongst 24 stations in Bayonne, Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, Union City and North Bergen, and linking waterfront destinations, NJ TRANSIT rail and bus routes, PATH trains and trans-Hudson ferry services.
