Since 1986, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day has provided an opportunity for Americans to reflect on the accomplishments of the civil rights movement and ask how we, too, can serve to make the world a better place.

This Monday, January 16th, look to local opportunities to commemorate this holiday. In West Windsor, the Mercer County Library at 33 North Post Road will hold its 5th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration, hosted by the West Windsor Township Human Relations Council and the WW-P African American Parent Support Group. The day will include a speech from keynote speaker Reverend Dr. Philip R. Newell entitled “Stories Of A Living Witness’ Journey With Dr. King During the Civil Rights Movement.”

On Saturday, January 14th in Edison, visit the Minnie B. Veal Community Center at 1070 Grove Avenue. Starting at 1pm, the Edison Recreation Department will host a day in honor of King’s life and legacy.

During the 1960s, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. served as an important activist for equal rights in America, and a strident advocate for non-violent means of resistance. His famous “I Have a Dream” speech still resonates and provides record of the struggles of minority groups for inclusion in the great American project of democracy, freedom and justice.
