Who says you need to travel to New York City to catch the best in independent filmmaking? Sponsored by the Rutgers Film Co-op/New Jersey Media Arts Center and the Rutgers University Program in Cinema Studies, the annual New Jersey Film Festival is now underway, bringing first-rate cinema to Middlesex County.
This year’s festival, which started on September 3rd and runs until November 4th, has already brought a diverse range of quality filmmaking to our state. From “Beijing Punk,” a documentary by Shaun Jefford revealing the thriving underground punk rock scene under the Chinese state, to “Dreams that Money Can Buy,” a 1946 film centering on a psychiatrist who reads the minds of his patients, the approximately 40 films featured in this year’s festival are eclectic, unique and sure to raise some interesting questions.
In the coming weeks, attendees can look forward to more though-provoking cinema: October 1st brings, among others, “Boundless,” a documentary about a 35 year-old man’s life with Down’s Syndrome, directed by Stephen Kanaris, and “Fanny, Annie & Danny,” a feature-length film about siblings, disability, and family battles-featuring an in-person appearance by director Chris Brown.
Check the New Jersey Film Festival website for more information on upcoming films and screening locations, and enjoy quality independent filmmaking right in your backyard! Most of the films featured in the Festival are being screened at Rutgers University’s Voorhees Hall.
