This past summer, Monroe township residents looking to work their green thumbs got a new opportunity to dig around the dirt. Last June, the Monroe Township Community Garden opened, making available its first 96 community plots. These plots were allocated on a first-come, first-served basis to community residents, who quickly jumped at the opportunity to be a part of this exciting program. An additional 176 plots will be added during Phase II of the garden’s development.
The two-acre garden is the largest in Middlesex County. It is adjacent to an additional 10 acres of land, on which the township hopes to build additional amenities including a gazebo dedicated to the arts, land on which native flora can grow, and educational signage with an emphasis on conservation.
The coming winter means a break for this growing community resource. But with the seeds planted, this spring is sure to see both the community and its latest source of food and recreation in full bloom.
