Since 1976, the US government has recognized February as Black History Month. A time for celebration, commemoration and education, Black History Month gives Americans an opportunity to look at the history of this country in all its complexity—and to celebrate the freedom of people of different races, ethnicities, religions and nationalities.

At Mercer County Community College, events throughout the month, from talks to theater performances and beyond, will pay heed to this annual celebration. On Saturday, February 2nd at 2pm, visit the Kelsey Theater house for a live performance of “1960 Black,” a play looking at the turbulent civil rights era. Tickets are $5 for students, $10 for the general public.

On Saturday, February 9th at 1pm, head over to the West Windsor campus student center for a live performance entitled “Drumming: The Musical Evolution of African Continentals Throughout the World.” On February 15th at 6pm, you can watch a screening of the documentary “Hidden Colors” and take part in a group discussion on the film’s subject, while on Wednesday, February 6th, you can enjoy an art lecture entitled “African-American Painters: Horace Pippin and Jacob Lawrence” from 12-1pm at MCCC’s Trenton campus.
