Memorial Day: it’s the unofficial kickoff to summer, filled with first-visits to the beach, barbecues, and other manners of warm-weather merriment. But, as the name suggests, the origins of the holiday are more somber in nature. Memorial Day is an occasion to remember those who have given their lives defending the United States and its allies here and abroad, and townships across the Garden State host parades to honor those who have served our country.

In Edison, this year’s Memorial Day Parade will begin at noon on Sunday, May 27th. Now in its 56th year, the Edison Memorial Day Parade will travel down Plainfield Avenue from Division Street to Oakland Avenue and will be marshalled by three-decade VFW Post 3117 member and chaplain Michael Meehan. The day will also highlight various civic and community groups, veteran organizations, military reserve units, police and fire departments, volunteer fire and first aid squads, youth organizations, local businesses and more, and will feature performances by marching bands from local high schools and beyond.
