Strike up the barbecue, kick up your feet and wait for the fireworks. It’s Memorial Day weekend, and for people across the United States, that means taking the day to spend time with neighbors, friends and family—and to relax. And in many New Jersey towns, it also means participating in or enjoying a community parade, and reflecting on the meaning of the day.
In Englewood, NJ, this year’s Memorial Day Parade will take place on Monday, May 27th, and will kick-off with a pre-parade ceremony at 10am at Soldier’s Monument, located at Palisade Avenue and Tenafly Road. Following the ceremony, the parade will take the streets, ending at Veteran’s Memorial Park.
Meanwhile, in Edison, NJ, the township parade will take place in the Stelton part of town on Sunday, May 26th, beginning at noon. The parade starts from Madison Avenue, travels along Amboy Avenue and ends at Jackson Avenue. This year marks the 51st anniversary of this township tradition.
Once known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day originated after the Civil War to honor the service of those who died from both sides of the battle. Since then, it has become an occasion to commemorate the military service of all those who have lost their lives serving the country, while celebrating what it is they fought for. So take some time to reflect, enjoy good company, and have a great Memorial Day weekend!
