On the third Monday in January each day, Americans commemorate Martin Luther King Day. Since its founding in 1983, the federal holiday has celebrated Dr. King’s legacy of nonviolent activism against racial discrimination on the state and federal level, as well as the wins of the civil rights movement.

This year, the day falls on Monday, January 21st, and in townships across New Jersey and the country, the holiday will be observed with organized community service and memorials. In Woodbridge, an interfaith salute will be held starting at 7pm at Woodbridge Community Center, located at 600 Main Street in Woodbridge, NJ. Over in West Windsor, the West Windsor Arts Center will be hosting an MLK Day of Service/Food and Clothing Drive, bringing together “service projects, speakers, music, and friends,” and inviting residents to drop off nonperishable goods for a food drive.

Whether you’re looking to the holiday as a day to reflect or as an opportunity to perform acts of community service, Martin Luther King Day is a great time to think about and engage with our nation’s history.
