Between its main library and its branch library, the Piscataway Public Library contains over 170,000 books in 38,500 square feet of space. Since January 26th, 2013, it’s offered something else: a do-it-yourself Maker Space equipped with a MakerBot 3D Printer, a sewing machine, digital recording equipment, robotics kits and more.

The MIY Makerspace, home to the Make-It Yourself Project, is an exciting addition to the non-print side of the Piscataway library. This initiative offers residents of all ages the opportunity to tinker, build and create using leading technologies—nurturing the creative, scientific and exploratory sides of the Piscataway community. The Make-It Yourself Project turns the library into a space of both consumption and production, where residents have access to the tools necessary to start building the future they want to see.

Maker and Hackerspaces are exciting new kinds of community spaces where people come together to use shared physical equipment to innovate. By bringing together a makerspace with its library system, Piscataway is taking a bold and forward-looking step toward a future of new technologies and potentials.
