This month, Metuchen has been a whirlwind of art and creativity. Every Friday night in June, residents have been celebrating Junebug ArtFest 2011, a collaborative artistic festival featuring paintings, performances, plants and more.

Hosted by the Metuchen Area Chamber of Commerce and the Metuchen Arts Council, Junebug ArtFest brings talented artists to the borough, while offering special events and workshops designed to stir the creative juices already in Metuchen.

This year, Junebug has brought such diverse programming as open mic nights, a Paper Hat Workshop, Children’s theater and the Junebug pet parade. And, via a successful online fundraising campaign, the ArtFest has brought painter, illustrator and printmaker Jane Dickson and conceptual artist and photographer Sandy Skoglund, whose works have both been showcased at world-class art institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Inclusion of these gifted artists represents a momentous addition to the ArtFest, setting a high standard for years to come. In addition, this year’s Junebug sculpture was rendered by the accomplished New Jersey artist Joy Kreves.

If you missed the stellar programming this month, don’t despair! This summer will offer more films, concerts and open mics in the borough. Look forward to the summer concert series coming this August, bringing blues, rock and reggae to downtown Metuchen on Thursday evenings.
