Since the early 18th century, Metuchen has existed as a unique community, both connected to and sitting apart from surrounding villages and townships. Its early congregations, stores and streets gave it a special character, which only strengthened as artists and intellectuals flocked to the town, earning it the nickname “the Brainy Boro.”
For residents looking to take a tour through the distant and not-so-distant past, this month presents an excellent opportunity. For the month of May, the Borough of Metuchen’s Historic Preservation Committee is hosting its 2015 Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt. This is a self-paced scavenger hunt, in which participants find architectural details located on buildings throughout the community. Metuchen Area Chamber of Commerce Gift Certificates in the amount of $25 will be awarded in four different categories following a drawing from a pool of all correct entrants. All entries must delivered to Borough Hall, located at 500 Main Street, by May 31, 2015.
