With the weather so warm and inviting this time of year, it seems a shame to spend too many waking hours indoors. Especially when there’s so much to do right out the front door of your rental near Edison, NJ.
First, take a trek to Roosevelt Park, the oldest park in Middlesex County, where you’ll find 217 sprawling acres of green space, complete with a sparkling, 8-acre lake. (And yes, anglers are welcome to bring their gear for a little fishing action.) The park is chock-full of activity spaces for the athletically inclined, including baseball fields, tennis courts, and basketball courts. Or if you just want a leisurely afternoon munching on sandwiches and snacks, pack some food and take advantage of the ample picnic spaces. And be sure to keep an eye out for performances in the park, including plays and live music.
Johnson Park is the ideal spot for families with little ones with an affinity for all things pirate. A brand-new playground installation includes all fun features you’d expect from any jungle gym, but in the shape of a pirate ship sailing the seven seas. Be warned, however: You may find the kids eager to head back to land and run over to the adjacent Animal Haven, where a variety of barnyard creatures — emus, mini horses, pigs, goats, and more — are on display. (And yes, even this part of the park is completely free!)
Another free option is Rutgers Gardens. The botanical garden includes a bamboo forest, rhododendron garden, holly collection, and herb garden, just to name a few features. You can easily while away an entire afternoon wending through the various flora and fauna. But be sure to take advantage of the educational programming provided at the Gardens, including classes that teach composting, pruning, and even cooking. Plus, be on the lookout for regular special events throughout the year, including seasonal festivals and farmers markets.
