Nerds…and where did the word originate? One theory is that it may have originated from the 1950 Dr. Seuss book “If I Ran the Zoo,” which includes a creature called a “nerd” with a description that matches the stereotypical image of a socially awkward and intellectually-focused person. Another theory suggests that “nerd” may have derived from the 1940s slang term “nert,” which was used to describe someone who was not cool or popular. Oh well, I guess I’ll never really know if started with Dr. Seuss or some 1940’s “nert” …Regardless of its origin, the word “nerd” has evolved over time to become a more widely accepted term for someone who is highly intellectual, socially awkward, or deeply passionate about a particular subject or hobby. I’m still not sure why my daughter thinks I’m one! 😉
