All you need to hear is the first note when she opens her mouth and you know…Aretha is in the room!

With global sales of over 75 million records, the late Aretha Franklin, the indisputable “Queen of Soul,” remains one of the world’s best selling artists to this day. The honors and accolades she received are too numerous to mention here but the standouts would have to be her 18 Grammy Awards, National Medal of Arts Award and of course her Presidential Medal of Freedom. She also broke the gender barrier when she became the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Her chops as a singer, songwriter and pianist were honed from her early days as a child singing in her daddy’s Baptist church in Detroit Michigan. While Aretha was signed at age 18 by Columbia Records, it would take many more years for her to career to flourish. It’s those formative challenging earlier years that Ewing Township tenants at Ewing Town CenterRiver Links and Delaware Heights will find most revealing when the 2021 biography drama flick RESPECT comes to the Ewing Public Library’s Sunday Movie Series on 2/25 @ 2pm.

Starring Jennifer Hudson, Forest Whitaker and Marlon Wayans, RESPECT follows the rise of Aretha’s career from a child singing in her daddy’s church’s choir to her international superstardom. Jennifer Hudsons’ performance as Aretha is particularly arresting and her powerhouse performance both as an actress and a singer is unforgettable.
