We’re all trying to live cleaner, greener lives. In Carteret, a host of initiatives has been in place to help residents and organizations alike reduce their environmental impact and make better energy choices.In 2009, Carteret linked up with “Help Light New Jersey” to promote and distribute free Energy Star certified lightbulbs. Almost 12,000 lightbulbs were distributed to households throughout the borough, encouraging a move toward environmental efficiency, and saving residents a few dollars along the way.In 2010, the Carteret Office of Community Development teamed up with Wakefern Food Corp. and ShopRite of Carteret to create the “Grocery Bag Re-Use Program.” Through the program, made possible by grants from the Carteret Business Partnership and Wakefern, over 50,000 reusable grocery bags were purchased and distributed to Carteret households.Moreover, Carteret has installed recycling stations in parks throughout the borough, uses hybrid-powered vehicles as part of its police fleet, and more. Through these initiatives and others, Carteret is showing the way to a more environmentally sustainable lifestyle for everyone.
