Back in 1984 when the Garden States’ pride and joy Bruce Springsteen released the song “Dancing in the Dark” (and a while later that amazing video of him dancing with Courtney Cox), the song evoked a sense of combatting alienation, fatigue and isolation in order to break on through to the other side of oneself.
Dance, in-and-of itself has always embodied the potential transcend and to unleash that which is kept locked inside of us. The “Boss” was probably unaware that one day Harvard Medical School would publish their own research on dance and the brain and by clicking here you can read a summary of their findings from 2015.
All this and more is what West Windsor teaching artist Shira Hofmekler is bringing to the West Windsor Arts Center on January 16 from 7:30pm-9:30pm when the DANCING IN THE DARK DANCE PARTY takes place. BestRentNJ.com West Windsor residents at Princeton Terrace can immerse themselves into what is described as a “… a one-of-a-kind dance experience designed to eliminate the barriers of self-consciousness and social judgment.”
The elements are simple & effective; a dark, dimly lit room, free of conversation and socializing – just dance and music. With darkness and music, participants propel themselves to the joy of their body’s movement, to the beat they follow. Each person sets the style, each person dances in the way that inspires them. Being in an inclusive, safe non-judgement zone, participants can let go and express themselves with dance in ways that words cannot approach.
In the adjacent rooms outside the dance room, participants are welcome to socialize but on the dimly lit dark dance floor – it’s dance ONLY.
