Diners. New Jerseyans love to love ‘em. From big egg breakfasts to late night snacks; from endless cups of coffee to songs on the jukeboxes, diners are a beloved part of the New Jersey experience.
But how did this come to be? Where did diners come from, and how did they become such an important part of the Garden State fabric?
For the curious, the Cornelius Low House has a year-long exhibit answering all your burning New Jersey diner questions. Called “Icons of American Culture: History of New Jersey Diners,” this seven-room exhibit traces the story of diners in the US from their Rhode Island roots, through the turn-of-the-century lunch wagons, and into the deluxe lunch cars that account for the signature appearance of so many diners today. The exhibit includes photos of vintage diners from around the Garden State, two diner booth mockups, a jukebox and more.
This great slice of Americana will help you see New Jersey diners with a new eye. Visit the Cornelius Low House now through June 2016 to see it for yourself.
