Visitors to the former Carteret town library will encounter something different as they visit the old building at 63 Carteret Avenue.

This borough staple, now well over one hundred years old, will soon become the Carteret Historic and Cultural Center. Set to be filled with pictures, documents, artifacts and more from the borough’s rich and storied history, the Carteret Historic and Cultural Center is sure to be a valuable living resource for curious Carteret residents of all ages.

In a fitting selection, the location that will house this Center is itself an emblem of the changes that Carteret, New Jersey has seen over the years. First built in 1898, the building originally served as a YMCA. Over the next thirty-two years, building ownership passed through the hands of various residents and families, serving as home to a number of industries. Donated to the Borough of Carteret in 1930, the building became the town library until it was abandoned in 2001.

Now, it’s set to receive a new lease on life. Construction on the building recommenced in December 2012. When it’s all complete, residents will be able to enjoy a completely revamped community space. Rich in history, and now rich in one more valuable town resource, Carteret continues to improve its cultural offerings and the quality of life of its residents.
