In one of the dozen or so boxes I have in storage is a photograph of me that my dad took, paddle in hand, shoving off on my first-ever solo canoe voyage at Cheesequake State Park way back in the day. On that day forever etched in my mind, my dad felt he could loosen the reigns so to speak and indeed I successfully paddled my way out and back to shore. Never had I experienced such freedom and responsibility at once and that father/son memory endures.
