Life is set to become easier for commuters in Carteret, NJ. Last spring, the Federal Transit Administration awarded a $6 million dollar grant to NJ Transit to help buy a boat and get ferry commuter service up and running, and officials have estimated that it could be operational as early as next fall.

Over the past few years, Carteret has put significant effort toward beautifying its waterfront along the Arthur Kill. In the coming years, the city has planned for an events center, urban beach, amphitheater, Ferris wheel and, to accommodate the new service, a ferry terminal, set for completion by 2022.

In the long run, the city hopes to have 2 to 3 boats providing service to commuters looking to get to midtown Manhattan. Ultimately, local officials hope to see the ferry terminal serving not just Carteret residents, but residents from Union and Somerset counties as well as elsewhere in Middlesex County.
