Since 1976, Americans have observed Black History Month during the month of February. An opportunity to focus on African-American history in the news, schools, and our neighborhoods, Black History Month is a celebrated tradition amongst communities in New Jersey.
Edison Township, home to BestRentNJ.com rental apartments including Oak Tree Village, Edison Woods and Hilltop Manor, has installed a display on the ground floor of Edison Municipal Complex, located at 100 Municipal Boulevard. The exhibit highlights African-American history, alongside posters made by local elementary school students featuring African-American sports heroes.
Meanwhile, Rahway launched its Black History Month celebration on Thursday, February 3rd, with an evening of education and entertainment at the Union County Performing Arts Center. The evening featured a performance of “The Red Zinger African-American Theatre Rag,” a compilation of both historical and contemporary dramatic readings by members of the Dunbar Repertory Company–along with a keynote speaker and reception. Down in Burlington County, the Willingboro Public Library has announced an African American History Month Reading Contest. Throughout the month, community members can enter a prize drawing at the library for reading books about African-American culture or by African-American authors.
