April brings sunshine, warmth and the first blooms of the season. It’s fitting, then, that April also brings Arbor Day, the annual holiday for planting and caring for trees.

First observed in Nebraska City, Nebraska in 1872, Arbor Day is now celebrated around the world. Last year, Lawrence Township residents celebrated Arbor Day with a tree-planting event at Lawrenceville Elementary School. Residents of all ages gathered as a tree donated by the Shade Tree Advisory Committee was planted. Students planted pinwheels around the new tree, while a poetry/yoga performance welcomed its arrival. The event brought awareness of the need to protect the woodlands, while also providing an opportunity for people to come together and enjoy the outdoors.

This year, Lawrence residents looking to celebrate Arbor Day should head to Terhune Orchards. On Friday, April 26th, Terhune Orchards will be hosting an Arbor Day event of its own, with special programming for preschool and school-aged children. The event begins at 10am; for more details, visit the Terhune Orchards website.
