Amazon.com is the leading e-commerce company in the United States, with over 150,000 employees and distribution facilities around the world. And soon, they’ll be adding one more: a one million square foot fulfillment center in Carteret, NJ.
Set to be located at the old Wakefern building at 8003 Industrial Ave., which is adjacent to the New Jersey Turnpike, the facility will bring with it hundreds of jobs for Carteret residents. The opening of the Carteret fulfillment will mark the second Amazon fulfillment center in the Garden State; the first is located in Robbinsville, NJ, in Mercer County, and opened in July 2014. The Robbinsville fulfillment center currently employs thousands of workers.
Initially launched in 1994 as an online book retailer, today Amazon.com is the go-to e-retailer for household items, electronic, apparel, food, furniture and more.
Of the company’s decision to locate their fulfillment center in Carteret, Mayor Dan Reiman said: “Amazon’s decision to locate here and make such a significant long term investment is recognition of our aggressive and ongoing redevelopment efforts. Amazon is the type of corporate partner that will help grow our local and regional economy, provide jobs and opportunity for our residents, and strengthen our expanding corporate tax base. We look forward to a long term working partnership.”
