Did you know that there is scientific evidence to support the assertion that gardening and getting your hands dirty in the soil actually makes you happier? Just a little known fact that a specific soil bacteria – Mycobacterium Vaccae – triggers the release of serotonin in our brain which is a natural anti-depressant that strengthens the immune system. Researchers also discovered that Dopamine which controls the brains reward and pleasure response is released in the brain when we harvest products from the garden and can even be triggered by seeing a fruit or a berry and even a smell let alone actually picking the fruit off the vine.
Interest in gardening is at a world wide high right now which is why Old Bridge residents at Woodhaven Commons, Woodhaven Meadows and Woodhaven Terrace would do well to catch up on some New Jersey garden history when the Old Bridge Public Library presents GARDENS OF THE GARDEN STATE on Sunday April 14 @2pm. Presented by a member of the Garden State Gardens Consortium, it includes the history and unique characteristics of more than 30 public NJ gardens. This could be a great first step to catching up on your favorites along with some gardens you might not be aware of before visiting and seeing them yourself.
The presentation will take place in the library’s large meeting room. Registration is required and by clicking here you can register online or if you prefer, over the phone by calling the information desk at 732-721-5600 x5033
