Last month, Wakefern Food Corp., better known by one of its grocery brands, ShopRite, announced its earnings for the past year. The upshot? At the company’s annual meeting in East Brunswick, NJ last month, Wakefern announced that it had seen retail sales improvement of 4%, achieving sales in the amount of $14.7 billion for the fiscal year.
These numbers are good news for the New Jersey-based cooperative, which opened a host of new stores over the past year, including six new ShopRites, five new PriceRites, and six Fresh Grocers. A thriving business, Wakefern benefits from a cooperative model that provides its member stores with services like computer support, insurance, advertising, marketing, merchandising and procurement.
A boon to New Jersey, Wakefern is the largest employer in the state, employing over 50,000 people in the Garden State alone. Founded in 1946, it is also the largest retailer-owned cooperative in the United States.
