RARITAN BAY WATERFRONT PARK:

Beautiful vistas, a beachfront walkway and views of NYC on a clear day make this 114 acre park one of our family favorites. While the large gazebos remain closed for now, there are plenty of benches one can claim to read a book or simply stare at the boats on the water and just plain relax. A barefoot walk on the beach last year made for a great late morning shell collecting adventure and we saw anglers casting their rods to fish but no one swimming. We spent a bit of time reflecting at the parks 9/11 “Victims of Terrorism” memorial…very moving. I’d also check back In late August because in September of each year there’s a Seafood Festival at the park which you don’t want to miss.

MIDDLESEX GREENWAY:

If you’re a biker, scooter kid, rollerblader, longboader, walker or runner this park is definitely going to capture your heart. Situated on an historic portion of the Lehigh Valley rail corridor, this 42-acre corridor was purchased by the County of Middlesex in 2002 as a rails-to-trails project for recreational use. With over 3.5 miles of 10 foot wide paved trails and no inclines (except the hill when you cross the passover traversing Route 1), most of the trail is beautifully shaded by trees so the summer heat won’t be hampering your outing.

OAK RIDGE PARK:

Here’s a great park on the Edison/Clark border that’s ideal for walkers/runners of all different levels. Whether you’re taking your dog out for a 2.5 mile jog or if you decide to follow all the twists, turns and inclines on one 5 mile go-thru, you’ll experience a combination of non-stop natural wooded beauty and surface variety that make for a great exercise experience. If archery is your thing, you’ll be glad to know that as of 5/23, they re-opened the archery range (only for those with a 2019 or 2020 Union County Archery ID for now) from 10am-6pm daily. I’d check this link as the summer unfolds to see if they are processing new applications for new archery licenses as I expect they might.
