Berries might be behind us, but apples, pumpkins and squash await: fall harvest is around the corner, and New Jersey farmers markets are still going strong. This month, look forward to fun events and environmentally conscious initiatives, coming to a farmers market near you.

At the Edison Farmers Market, check out the 2nd Annual Edison Farmers Market Food Challenge, coming Sunday, September 16th (rain date: Sunday, September 30th). Dishes will be submitted in one of five categories — appetizer, salad, side dish, main dish and dessert — and will be evaluated by a panel of five judges on the basis of taste (40%), use of seasonal ingredients (25%), nutrition (20%) and appearance (15%).

If you’re ready enter the competition by submitting your dish, fill out this form and be sure to include at least one seasonal ingredient in your dish. Entries must be dropped off between 11am and 12pm; winners will be announced at 12:45pm. Winners will receive prizes in the form of gift certificates to local establishments.

The Edison Farmers Market is located at 925 Amboy Avenue in the Jade Dynasty Restaurant Parking Lot. The farmers market is open 8am-2pm every Sunday through October. Whether you make it to the food challenge or not, be sure to check out the farmers market before the season’s done — nothing tastes quite as good as locally grown produce.
